Trauma

Undergoing an experience that threatens your feeling of safety and sense of security can leave you feeling like you’re constantly running on empty. Perhaps you were emotionally abused, physically hurt or you experienced a sudden life change that you were not fully prepared for.

These kinds of events can leave wounds in us that don’t heal just because the event is over. You might still not feel safe enough to fully live or be confident. This is a normal reaction to a traumatic event. Perhaps you avoid certain places, situations or thoughts because you fear that you will be engulfed by intense emotions.

It is normal to be in this heightened sense of vigilance or alertness for months or even years after the event. The memory might be distant and you are not sure if it is still really affecting you, but something in your body still remembers, and it is afraid to let down it’s guard in case you might be vulnerable again. You might be unsure why you can’t relax and fully connect with people around you.

How do you heal from the past?

The process starts by being in an environment that feels safe to the body and mind. We can’t let go and truly be ourselves until we feel relaxed enough to do so. When it feels right, we will discuss the feelings and issues that have prompted you to seek therapy. Just as painful encounters and experiences can make you feel unsafe and constantly exposed, a trusting and safe relationship can undo this hurt.

Although the past is important in informing why your feelings or outlook are as they are, we will also focus on the present and how you can address your current issues with a different outlook.

Healing doesn’t happen by recounting a painful story until it no longer hurts, but by helping you feel safe enough that you don’t feel like painful experiences define who you are and how you should live. During our therapy sessions, we will build a relationship of deep trust and understanding, at your own pace, so you can re-gain your sense of safety and calm.
